Ilustracje w czasopiśmie „Przyjaciel Ludu” – od oświeceniowego encyklopedyzmu do wizualnego kanonu narodowego

Przyjaciel Ludu, the journal published in Leszno between 1834 and 1849, occupies an exceptional place among Polish illustrated journals and periodicals from the first half of the nineteenth century. Similarly to other periodicals, such as Magazyn Powszechny, Muzeum Domowe or Księga Świata, the title draws on the patterns earlierdeveloped in Western Europe and widely employed in inexpensive encyclopaedic journals. What clearly stands out in the journal’s graphical layout, however, is the sheer number of published illustrations that primarily refer to Polish-related subjects and themes. Over a thousand “Polish” engravings that had been published in thejournal throughout its 15-year-long existence opens up some discussion on what actually the origins and relevant patterns used in Przyjaciel Ludu were. The other questions that need to be answered include: what is the origin and the subject-matter for the illustrations included in the journal, and ultimately what are the reasons for thisparticular transformation from a journal presenting a universal, enlightened insight into the Europen culture into one that was committed to and involved in individual, nation focused visions and standpoints concerning the future and the present of nations?Wydawany w latach 1834–1849 w Lesznie „Przyjaciel Ludu” zajmuje wyjątkowe miejsce pośród polskich czasopism ilustrowanych pierwszej połowy XIX wieku. Podobnie jak inne periodyki („Magazyn Powszechny”, „Muzeum Domowe”, „Księga Świata”) odwołuje się do wykształconych na zachodzie Europy wzorców tanich czasopism encyklopedycznych. Wyróżnia go jednak duża liczba ilustracji, a przede wszystkim znaczna część reprodukcji poświęconych tematyce polskiej. Ponad 1100 rycin polskich, które pojawiły się w czasopiśmie przez 15 lat jego istnienia, otwiera pole do rozważań na temat genezy i wzorców „Przyjaciela Ludu”, pochodzenia i tematyki jego ilustracji, wreszcie na temat przekształcenia się uniwersalnego, oświeceniowego spojrzenia na kulturę europejską w indywidualne, narodowe wizje przeszłości i teraźniejszości poszczególnych nacji
